Greer names Nicole Hood as new girls basketball coach

Nicole Hood was introduced as the new head girls basketball coach at Greer High School.

The Greer Lady Yellow Jackets have a new head basketball coach.

Nicole Hood was announced at a press conference on Monday to be the new head coach of Greer girls’ basketball.

“I’m super excited to be here,” said Hood. “I’ve had so many people speak so highly of this school and this community and how much they get behind their sports. That was something huge for me.”

Hood most recently served as the head coach of the girls’ basketball program at Westside High School. In two years coaching the Lady Rams, Hood compiled a 48-7 record and made back-to-back 4-A Upper State championship appearances, as well as a state championship appearance last season.

Hood wants to bring similar success to Greer.

“Ultimately, it just boils down to creating a positive atmosphere, an atmosphere where the girls here enjoy playing basketball,” said Hood. “There has been some tradition here at Greer, and we want to bring back that vibe, that culture of excitement. I want to get girls within the community involved in the sport from a young age.”

Greer athletic director Josh Smith described Hood as a “home-run hire.”

“We had so many impressive applicants, but when we first started talking to Nicole, we loved everything she stood for, not just as a basketball coach, but as an individual.

“The experience she brings from being a very successful high school coach and being a great college player, that will be beneficial for our girls. We are very thankful to have her.”

New Greer girls basketball coach Nicole Hood and her family were introduced at Greer High School on Monday afternoon.

Hood will inherit a Greer team that went 10-15 last year and lost in the first round of the Class 4-A playoffs. She says she can’t wait to get to know her players and get things going on the court.

“I’m really looking forward to it all. I’m ready to get some practice in once we’re able to and do some team-bonding activities, just to have an opportunity to really get to know these girls,” said Hood. “I can’t wait to get started.”
